I always loved Pat playing in settings like this more than Pat Metheny Group. This is my favorite album of his. The writing!!! The playing!!! Can't be beat.

Check out Bela Fleck playing this on Banjo (an arranged version with other instruments, but still...)

He is creating harmonics by muting the string with his hand, much the same as you would do on a guitar string. Just a way of playing with the sound of the instrument, really.
