Books:
I relish the Tao Te Ching (The Way of Life)- my favorite translation is by Witter Bynner. I love to read Charles Bukowski's poetry because I could never meet that many hookers and drink that much alcohol without dying, which he did, but not of that. The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand changed my life, all for the better. A gentleman named T. Coraghessan Boyle is tops on my list for sheer scope of vocabulary and character, as is Dan Simmons, whose 4 book Hyperion series is one of the best damn book series I have read, transcending it's inadequate sci-fi label to a futuristic realism that seems so very possible. Then there is Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his One Hundred Years of Solitude and Nicholson Baker's steamy Fermata; Crow's Jazz Anecdotes and Richard Brautigan's whole catalog. Chester Himes' Coffin Ed and Gravedigger Jones, James Marquand's Mr. Moto series, Robert Heinlien's sci fi, Dougal Dixon's After Man and Man After Man, Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, Khalil Gibran's The Prophet, and even Annie Schmidt's The Island of Nose, which if you can find, will enthrall you. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy are high on my list for sure. The Shadow of the Wind and The Angels' Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon make my list of recommendations, as does The Master Butcher's Singing Club by Louise Erdich. Make sure you check out The Collected Checkered Demon by S. Clay Wilson, plus Harveyporn by S.R. Nicholas (if you're lucky enough to find it) and of course The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Please read. TV kills. Except Bill Maher, Jon Stewart and Family Guy ;-)
