Your "official" match case looks suspiciously like the $1 cases from Wal-Mart. Exactly like them in fact. I have a few and they're adequate. The bar on the bottom is a tiny ferro rod, not a match striker. Good luck lighting matches on it. It's not great as a ferro rod either for that matter.

You had to use a lot of muscle force the blade thru- looks like you need to touch it up on the stones a bit. A really sharp knife will push cut the corner of a phone book one handed without much effort.

But if that's the factory edge I'd say "not bad." Most factory edges suck.

The real "trick" is that the matches can be wet but the striker must be dry. Squeegie all the water you can off and it will work.

This applies to every match on the market that I've tried, no matter how expensive.

Ah, very true. I think a plastic drop cloth is a good PSK component, and I carry one in any kit large enough to accommodate the size. Still, I would use it in conjunction with my bivy bag, not as a replacement. The plastic would be good to waterproof a debris shelter or provide a dry floor.

I think you got a crappy batch of Webers. I've used 10 full boxes and they float and burn for me. Again, both are really crappy if left open for a couple weeks.

FWIW I recently tried this with the Chinese "Bleuet" version of Esbit- no joy. I could have worn my 'steel in two to no avail. So stick with the real thing!

Great followup! One thing I'd like to try is using beeswax; it melts at a higher temp and won't melt in your car or backpack in the summer.

Nice review. But in my experience the Bleuet won't light with a 'steel. I shaved a cube and nearly wore my Ranger 'steel in half- no joy. This was most disappointing as I've always lit Esbit & Coghlan's hex tabs this way.

Esbit costs more than alcohol but the Esbit stove can use wood to augment or even replace the hexamine. Heck, you can even get a small DIY alky stove in there and use the stove as a pot stand.

Esbit fuel will work in any climate or altitude, and makes an incredible firestarter. I'll never be...
