Four-hundred miles (700 km) from the Alaska road system, on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, lie dozens of small Yup'ik Eskimo villages. They vary in population and lifestyle, but they remain largely devoid of outsiders, save for school teachers, itinerant paraprofessionals, and (in summer) adventurous tourists/fishermen. This is one of the last remaining areas of Alaska where the indigenous language/culture are alive and practiced. I've lived and worked in this region as an educator since 1981. (I believe I've learned more from my students than they have from me.)
