This is Dickey Betts rehearsing with the two drummers and Berry Oakley. A few years ago I got this with a group of several dozen bootleg downloads that included four or five other "rehearsal" versions of Blue Sky that were even shorter and more primitive and showed the development of the song. I think this was released by the Chantels first, in 1957 as the flip side to their first hit "He's Gone." This was 1958. I love both versions, but this is pure wonderful Doo-Wop. Their "I Laughed" is one of my all-time favorites. Check it out if you haven't.

I remember clearly watching television news that morning. Eyewitnesses, one after another, reported seeing an explosion and/or a fire (some reported both) before the plane began to fall. Saw her for the first time in a small club in Boulder late 1973, early 1974, can't remember which. I'd liked her first two albums but really hadn't paid much attention to her. She knocked me out of my seat that night, what a talent!

The 1971 album blew me away because I experienced Link Wray in the early '60s at college when he played -- get this -- fraternity parties. Just good old-fashioned hard rock at top voume in a fraternity house living room. Then I totally lost track of him. All of a sudden there's this amazing album...
