Playing drumset since I was 9 y.o. started out listening to Rock (Van Halen, Metallica, George Thorogood, Clash, Madness), primarily because of whatever rhythmically complex guitar solos were present in the songs of these bands.
By 14, developed an ear for Jazz guitarists, esp. Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Wes Montgomery. Always a big Benson fan too (Jazz and r'n'b/pop). My interest in funk and fusion developed out of my ever increasing immersion in the music of Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd, McCoy Tyner, et al.
One of the albums I listened to teh most in my teenage years was the Monty Alexander trio album, whose now I now forget.
