This is a fantastic band. The only problem was that Columbia commercialized the musical output so much. The soloists are great. Charlie Kennedy on alto, Buddy Wise on tenor, Dick Taylor on bone, Al Porcino screaming...etc. George Williams and Gerry Mulligan did most of the charts, doing their bes...

I love this recording as it brings back memories of me trying to absorb the ideas of bebop, swing, and between. Listening to this and playing with it is just a fantastic exercise in listening and improvisation, as one goes from the ideas of McGhee to Smith to Pres to Parker. I even recall the tro...

S'Wonderful - Artie Shaw Orchestra with Dick Johnson Clarinet
This great arrangement played by the New Artie Shaw Orchestra of S'Wonderful at Disneyland

A few notes. The arrangement was not til late 1944, as AS hadn't organized the band until Oct-Nov 1944. The Victor tune was recorded in 1945. He fails to mention Ray Conniff as the arranger. The bass is really terrible here, failing to make the decrescendo before the key change. The Victor is a b...

This is an interesting recording, and my belief is that the Shaw solo is dubbed in. Notice there is absolutely NO interaction between Haymes and Shaw. Shaw's career was unfortunately at an all-time low at this point and it was due to prior commitments to Decca that he did these recordings.

I am not a fan nor critic of early swing music. However, Bill Finegan is a genius arranger who didi a lot with very little to work with. Even Miller, who by most accounts was a mediocre trombonist, fits in quite nicely with his solo.

@PhillySouth "Lady Day here has a LENGTHY clarinet solo. I think you are confusing this with "Little Jazz", though there ARE a couple others Shaw doesn't play on, like his final Decca Session in 1953-54, which is really and honestly bad - and I've got a couple 1938-9 ish live broadcasts that have...
