With an overactive imagination and an abounding energy for creating new dances, Regina Klenjoski rooted herself in the Los Angeles contemporary dance scene by stepping out and doing things her own way. Ideas formed, movement followed, and the audiences came. In 1999 the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company, or more affectionately called RKDC, came to fruition making its presence known immediately in its Southbay home. With a wellspring of ideas and innovative choreography for the modern dance community, a passion for seeking out and connecting to the non-dancing public, and a focused ambition for making quality art, RKDC propelled itself into its first ten year run and has yet to slow down.Praised for its exquisite design and moving performances, RKDC has captivated the eyes of the Los Angeles dance community and has accumulated accolades from some of Californias foremost authorities on dance, boasting 24 Lester Horton award nominations and numerous commissions from the state. Lewis Segal of the LA Times noted that, Regina Klenjoski (is one) of the most active and ambitious dance makers leading Southland contemporary companiesalways out there presenting new work and exploring new directions. With its insatiable thirst for exploration and artistic expansion, RKDC claims over 20 dance works in its repertory including dramatic evening-length pieces, intimate choreographic studies, made for film dances, and site-specific installations. The dance company has also continually sought to co-create new works with other artists, composers, designers, and choreographers, priding itself with its rolodex of collaborators.
With Ms. Klenjoskis passion to make modern dance accessible to the non-dancing public, she has driven RKDC to become one of Los Angeles most influential dance companies in arts education. As a result, the company has received numerous grants and awards for their work in the fields of dance performance and dance education. Within its own local community, RKDC was awarded an ongoing partnership with the City of Torrance Learning Center for Arts Excellence in 1999, and has since established a thriving residency program. RKDC now offers more than 50 dance classes a week at the Learning Center, where many classes are taught by company members themselves. Reaching out to its larger community, RKDC produces a much-anticipated and highly awarded contemporary dance festival each year called SOLA. During this unique, one of a kind festival, emerging choreographers in Los Angeles are partnered with young, aspiring, and professionally-minded dance artists from a wide range of local schools and performing arts programs. The fusion between the professional choreographer and the young, promising performer produces an extremely unique working experience for both parties, as well as a wake of original dance work and many memorable performances.
In 2001 RKDC became established as a non-profit organization by the state, allowing the company to expand their efforts in bringing quality performances and educational opportunities to a diverse audience. With its established residency, successful educational program, and seasoned choreographer, RKDC strives to push into the future and further root itself as a distinguished artistic voice in California and beyond.
