Fringe Festival 7-29-11
River Cow Orchestra is the only music group which has played at the Kansas City Fringe Festival since it's inception. When the festival began it was primarily theatrical productions and there were no venues for live music performance. River Cow Orchestra (then called Brother Iota) performed on the street (in the Crossroads district) in 100 degree July heat during the first two years of the festival. Thanks to Cheryl Kimmi, executive director for asking us back each year to perform at the Fringe. During the 2011 festival we performed at Fringe Central located at 1730 Broadway across the street from the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
Writers Place 9-10
A wonderful evening of dance, poetry and music. Dancers from Kacico Contemporary Dance Company shared their talents with Kansas City finest poets and the musicians from River Cow Orchestra. The artistry was improvised and spontaneous. An amazing event hosted by The Writer's Place of Kansas City.

Go Wake The Rooster (2011) CD
This music is from a studio session that generated 17 tunes of which we chose 10 for this collection, Go Wake The Rooster. This is experimental jazz sporting a vast variety of influences and styles that make the music hard to describe. Sure it has E. E. Pointer's fabulous horn, and Allen McGinty's nimble bass, but the whole band creates a unique sound that you won't find in just any joint around town. To begin with, it is all improvisational, no charts, everything you hear is happening as it is being recorded. We know we're supposed to try and describe this music in such a way that you'll think, yeah, that's so Miles, or that was a little chunk of the Jazz Messengers, or that was ... . But, we just can't put it all in a box labeled and sent off to your ear. You will have to try it out. It is not for everyone. But you never know--have a listen... .
E.E. Pointer trumpet, Allan McGinty bass, Michael LaGrega violin and synthesizer, Greg Field percussion and poetry, Brent Bowman keyboard.

Mother Tongue (2011) CD
River Cow Orchestra alters the conventions of jazz. Our music philosophy focuses on collective improvisation, similar to the old New Orleans Jazz parades, paying particular attention to how each band member interacts with the group as a whole. We discard traditional features such as written melodies over fixed chord changes and instead focus on the roots of jazz, collective spontaneous improvisation.
We seek to explore the process of artistic creation rather than focus on making a polished commercial product for entertainment. We emphasize musical mood and place an aesthetic premium on the character and personality of each musician rather than the technical skill of each individual.
We follow the trailblazers of avant garde and free jazz who cast off conventional jazz elements in search of greater artistic expression. We believe the forefront of jazz innovation lies with collective spontaneous improvisation. We are indebted to the jazz musicians which spearheaded the way.
River Cow Orchestra is not ordinary music, it challenges the audience. If you are interested in discovering something different we dare you to listen.
