RICHARD "RICKY" WATTS

Born in 1980, Ricky Watts grew up one-hour north of San Francisco in the town of Petaluma. From a young age, he loved to draw and would create his own comics, mostly involving dinosaurs, killer ants and army tanks.

At age 13, Ricky's world forever changed when a classmate introduced the book, Spraycan Art. From that moment, everything he did revolved around his new passion for aerosol art. It went so far that, at 16, he obtained a fake I.D. claiming he was 18 so he could purchase spray paint after his parents refused to support his habit.

In 1995, Watts self-published the first issue of Helmetheds, a black and white art zine featuring art by his peers. Over the next 8 years, he'd publish 13 issues and a clothing line, featuring many (then) up and coming artists Mike Giant, Shepard Fairey, Alex Pardee, and Greg "Craola" Simkins, to name a few.

Ricky enrolled at the Art Institute of California's San Diego campus in 1999 and earned a degree in graphic design. He returned to the bay area in 2003 and began working as a designer for a local print company. He'd spend the next 10 years in the printing industry, eventually leaving to pursue freelance ventures.

While working in the print industry, Ricky began painting on canvas in the evenings. In 2004, his debut solo show "Spontaneous Combustion" got rave
reviews and nearly sold out the opening night. This fueled his desire to create more works on paper, canvas, metal, wood and other found objects.

He has shown at galleries in San Francisco, Oakland, New York City, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego and through out Sonoma County. His art has been featured in Refused Magazine, X-Funs (Taiwan), Bay Area Graffiti, Four G's magazine, Modern Fix, The Flop Box and Flo multi-zine.
