Weather was cold for this part of Texas, but a few Anhingas were still at Brazos Bend State Park. The air temperature was in the 40's (F) and the sky was grey and cloudy. The Anhingas wouldn't be able to use the sun to help counteract the heat lost through their soaked feathers. But, they fished anyway. This Anhinga was close enough for me to shoot this video. The morning of Sunday, December 26, 2010, had temperatures low enough for a skin of ice to be on low-shaded water, and frost on the Spillway Bridge. Although the sun came out, the air didn't get much above 45 degrees. The day was cold--at least by Brazos Bend State Park standards. I was out on the trails anyway, looking for Eagles and Otters. I couldn't find either one. While I was at 40 Acre Lake, I noticed a Crow hovering near the surface of the water next to one of the islands. Then, I saw a Great Egret doing the same thing. It would hover close to the surface of the water, and sometimes stab down with its beak. Occasionally I thought I saw something splash under the surface. I assumed that the Egret was harassing Pied-Billed Grebes if they surfaced with prey. I've seen this before, and figured that's what was going on. I decided to try to film this activity. First, I tried to follow a Grebes as they dove and surfaced--but it's difficult to see where they are going to surface. So, I decided to watch and film the Egret instead. I shot a few high speed clips of the Egret taking off, hovering, and stabbing the water. After reviewing these, I couldn't tell if the Egret was stealing from a Grebe or not. I never noticed a Grebe surface from where the Egret grabbed a fish. I edited together some of these clips, so I could watch this magnificent Great Egret hovering and flying in the early afternoon sun. I really enjoy the brief glimpses of the shadow of the head and neck projected through the wings. I hope you enjoy it as well. Alligators aren't as ornery as crocodiles; and usually lead quite lives--regardless of how much people want them to be dangerous carnivores. I've been helping at Brazos Bend State Park over 9 years, and spent a lot of time near the alligators. I've been able to interpret what I've seen by finding current research papers and reference books, or even contacting some of the researchers. On October 10, 2010, I watched a pair of alligators chewing on the carcass of a large buck. Unlike most of the mass-copied emails we get about alligators and Brazos Bend State Park, this actually DID happen inside the park. The buck was probably wounded by a human (archery season had opened a week before), and found by the alligators. The carcass was old; bleached and bloodless. The large alligator was about 8 feet long--I verified this later when I identified the alligator on the trail by its bad eye and a scar under the other eye. Since it was lying on the trail I could easily estimate its size. Usually, alligators are possessive of their food. In this case, the large alligator allowed the smaller one to climb all over it and the carcass with hardly any challenge. The alligators were about 10 yards from me at the beginning. Later they were about 30 yards away during most of the later carcass handling. For those familiar with the park, I first found the alligators just West of the West end of the Spillway Bridge. The large one swam East close by the Spillway Bridge-followed by the small one (I walked alongside them, so I have no doubt about the size of these alligators), and stopped about 30 yards East of the end of the bridge. Alligators at the park are rarely seen eating deer--as attested to by the park staff and hundreds of park visitors that I've spoken with. I shot this all with a Casio EX-FH20, mostly at 210fps.
