For over 80 years the RFDS has guided the continued evolution of its aeromedical service which has truly encapsulated Rev John Flynn's vision of a "mantle of safety" . A key component of this service has been the retrieval of critically ill or injured patients ensuring that no matter where they are they can be given access to the highest quality of health care. The RFDS experience in this regard is unsurpassed with our teams flying around 24 million kilometres each year. This has meant that RFDS doctors and nurses are amongst the most experienced Retrieval Medicine clinicians in the world. The retrieval and transport of critically ill patients remains one of the most challenging aspects of modern medicine. Clinicians need to possess a broad range of critical care skills and be able to adapt them in what is a highly restrictive and often unpredictable or hostile environment. Teaching and training opportunities for those seeking a career in Retrieval Medicine have traditionally been quite limited and it is for this reason that RFDS has combined all of its expertise into creating the RFDS STAR Program - Specialised Training in Aeromedical Retrieval. This program has been designed to improve the delivery of critical care in aeromedical retrieval and provides opportunities to receive training and education in all aspects of this challenging discipline.
