About Me:

I am the leader of the family bluegrass band called The Skinner Family Band. We play mostly Reno and Smiley material. Reno style banjo is my passion and I try to promote Don Reno as much as I can. He deserves a lot more credit for his contributions to the banjo and bluegrass music. I also enjoy helping others that are interested in Reno style too. I also write the Reno style column for Banjo Newsletter.

You seem to be the experts. I am desperately trying to find a CD or DVD with Don Reno playing Home Sweet Home in the chord of D. I'm having trouble finding it but I know it exists because my dad used to have the tape back in the 70's and he wants a copy of it. Was hopeing to get it by Fathers Day but that isn't working out too well. Help me if you can.

Thanks! Great Site!

Jason and family. Great job on everything you all are doing. Jason you sound more like Don everyday. The family's playing great as well. Keep it up my friends. See you soon I hope and we can pick some together.

Dear Renopicker,

I love what you are doing. I saw Reno and Smiley many times as a boy at the WRVA Old Dominion Barn Dance. Reno was a uniquely gifted musician.

I recall seeing the ten-year-old Ronnie Reno standing on a wooden box to reach the microphone and singing "I Like 'Lasses (molasses)".

All the best.

What exactly model and type of banjo did don reno play?
I'm sure he played several, but I'm talkling about the one called "ol nellie".

Which one today is closest to that one?

Great footage.  Don Reno was and is one of the best pickers the banjo will ever see.  Also, I like what you did with rawhide.  Very clever.
