When steam bending via heat, it is the hot temperature of the steam that heats the lignon (the wood's own glue) in the wood, softens it and allows the wood to be bent. The wood just needs to be super heated and not moisturized throughout. The lignon cools and hardens again and the wood retains it's shape. Red oak and ash are best. I've successfully bent old oak sawn 150 years ago.
