Piccolo trains Gohan for a year in the dessert to prepare for the incoming Saiyans. In this exchange, Gohan freezes with fear before Nappa and Piccolo dives in to save him, dieing in the process. Gohan swears to go to Namek and find the Dragon Balls to wish him back.
Adventures on Namek lead to several fights, a few nasty bouts of temper, and a potential unlock from Guru. Piccolo is indeed wished back and aids Krillin, Gohan, Vegeta, and Goku in their battle against Frieza. Goku remains behind on Namek eventually defeating Frieza while the others head back to Earth.
While Goku is gone (training in space), Gohan continues to have adventures with his friends at home. Garlic Jr. resurges (from movie one, for those who don't know) with a bout of black water mist infecting the minds of all of those on the planet. Gohan is lead to believe that everyone he knows has been infected by this brainwashing water including his mother, his mentor, and Krillin. A battle ensues in which we discover that Piccolo and Krillin are not infected, rather faking it, and Garlic Jr. is booted from Kami's lookout back into his own personal oblivion.
A few months after Gohan and the Z crew head out to the dessert when they feel Frieza's familiar ki coming closer to earth. Frieza returns with King Cold, only to be slain by a 'mysterious youth.' Goku returns from space shortly after the battle. The mystery man tells them all to train because of a threat that will come in three years. Gohan, Piccolo and Goku spend the three years training together.
At this point the androids show up, and Future Trunks returns. Goku is struck with a heart virus and the Z crew battle on while he is recovering. Once well again, Goku decides to use the Room of Spirit and Time to train to face the new threat, Cell. He and Gohan spend one year in the room (the equivalent of one day in the outer world). Gohan hits Super Saiyan while in this room training with his father (after pushing his father into nearly killing him first...).
The two exit back to the real world to find that Cell has allowed for Ten days rest before initiating a tournament. Goku and Gohan take it easy during this time. When it comes to the Tourny, Goku fights first, only to throw in the towel. He claims to know a stronger fighter than himself, and calls Gohan in. Gohan reluctantly obeys his father, however it is Piccolo that points out from the side lines to Goku that Gohan does not love fighting as the father does. Gohan winds up explaining to Cell that his true power only comes out when angry. Cell decides to push him.
Through much manipulation Cell gets his wish and an angry Gohan blasts into Super Saiyan 2. In this form Gohan is easily more powerful and faster than Cell, and grows cocky with the ability. Cell resonds by attempting to blow up the planet, and himself. Goku steps in and using the Instant Transmission technique he learned in space teleports Cell to other world. Goku dies in the blast, but Cell returns.
The fight between Gohan and Cell continues, but this fight is more desperate. Near the end, Cell delivers a powerful Kamehameha, Which Gohan is forced to counter one armed. Goku aids him from other world and Cell is finally destroyed.
