The Coffee
When Robin and John were thinking about the coffee business, they wanted to serve their customers the best coffee available. In doing there research they discovered Dillanos Coffee Roasters of Sumner, Washington. This is a micro coffee roasting company based on quality and integrity. They are versatile enough to roast smaller batches for companies like Red Horse Coffee and having an incredible industry-wide reputation for roasting specific profiles requested by their clients. After reviewing the roasting policy and procedures and doing extensive taste tests at the Dillanos Coffee Roasters facility, John and Robin decided Dillanos would be the exclusive roasters of Red Horse Coffee. The end product was a cup of of the smoothest coffee available in the Mid-Willamette Valley, guaranteed.

The Family
The Howe family of the 1776 Revolutionary War era had their origin dating from the Saxon invasions of England in the 5th century A.D. Two prominent Howe's, General Sir William and Admiral Sir Richard, my Uncles, played major roles in the Revolutionary War of 1776. Sir William commanded the entire war operation in the colonies. Another brother, General George Augustus Howe, was killed at Ticonderoga during the French-Indian War in 1758. Here supposedly was the historical accounting of the "three" crownbrothers, except for an "accidental" omission in those accounts of a younger brother, my Uncle Joseph. He came to America to join his "brother" George in the French-Indian war. Major Joseph Howe became disillusioned after finding George dead. He quit the army and drifted into what was the southwest corner of the then New Jersey-Virginia colony.

All of the brothers were considered to be from an illegitimate lineage in that their grandmother, a woman of royal status, had been mistress to the King George the First. The brothers were often referred to as the illegitimate uncles of King George the Third. A narrow and fuzzy line often separated legitimate royal lineages.

When Joseph left the army he was expelled from his family and cut off from privileges such as using the family coat of arms to create a business. Undeterred, Joseph created his own coat of arms placing a prominent red horse head at its center. Joseph, then, built and operated the Horse Head Inn for approximately 20 years. The Inn was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor until the invading English Army burned it to the ground in 1777.

I grew up with this verbal history from early childhood. When the time came to name our coffee business we considered over two hundred names. My family history echoed loudly and the red horse continued to red horse coffee company logorise to the top of the list. So, we took the horse and the original color, as it appeared on the original sign, and became Red Horse Coffee Company. A family owned and operated business proudly serving our community since 1758.
