Jill Pankey

Jill is in her seventh year in the Department of Art and Design, at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. This is just her day job. Her series of female forms and decorative dancing figures are crowding her studio space. She has explored the recurring theme that of the female form in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Her vehicle is the decorative oil painted surfaces and patterning in the figures that are moving across her canvases. She reminds us of the passion and power of dance and movement, or perhaps the interaction between the figures in her work. She wants them to have a voice.

These oil paintings come from her years as a co-owner in the fitness business paired with her past job as a graphic artist. I have developed a huge interested in the wide range of body types and attitudes of women. I like real women, but I am also drawn to the elegance of dancers and movement. She began incorporating patterning and design qualities in her work as a way of adding more information to her colorful surfaces. There is more to her paintings than decorative dancing female forms. Each painting means something personal or suggestive or humorous, but always fun. In our contemporary society, with so many challenges and hurdles, she wants the viewer to take time to be reminded of the simple pleasures that music and art bring to us.

Pankey has had several commissions, national awards, and has participated in local and national art shows. In the summer of 2009 she is committed to a residency in Russell, New Zealand to continue her exploration of her colorful patterned dancing figures. Her passion for her craft has been discovered by galleries in Austin, San Antonio, and now Santa Fe, New Mexico.
