Raspoet Ojenke has been writing and performing his poetry since 1965. An original member of the Watts Writers Workshop Ojenke was a seminal figure in the "black poetry" explosion of the sixties and seventies. In 1976, at the National Black Poetry Conference, held at Sacramento State University, Ojenke was described as the "John Coltrane of Black Poetry." Ojenke himself calls his poetry "sheets of meaningful sounds bringing waves of images. Raspoet Ojenke has performed his poetry in numerous venues, including colleges, rallies, community centers, culturaal events, poetry festivals, workshops etc. It is Raspoet Ojenke's conviction that poetry is primarily an oral art for; too him the spoken word is the only legitimate means to transmit poetry. According to Raspoet Ojenke"Poems are written on the hearts of people." Raspoet Ojenke's poetry has been published in such magazines as Antioch Review, Black World, American Indian Review; some of the anthologies Raspoet Ojenke has been published in are, From The Ashes, Now, Watts Poets and Giant Talk.
