Rapso Rebel aka Bro. Shortman, real name Everard Romany, is one of the pioneers in the rapso movement from Trinidad & Tobago.
The music grew out of the social unrest and black consciousness movement of the 1970s and, though it is often described as a fusion of soca and American hip hop, it is a unique style of street poetry that relates the everyday experiences of people in Trinidad.
The birth of the Network Riddum Band at the end of the 1970s with its leaders, Brother Shortman and Brother Resistance, heralded the new reality of roots music from Trinidad and Tobago.
Their 1981 debut album, Busting Out, became a major hit, defining the musical genre that would come to be known as rapso. Busting Out was the first album to use the word rapso. The biggest hit from this album is the song "Dancing Shoes". After releasing "Rapso Explosion" in 1984 Bro. Shortman left the group.
In 2005 Rapso Rebel made a comeback with his group House of Rapsoul with music arranged and produced by Soca Rebels. The music has developed into what Rapso Rebel describes as Rapsoul. The debut CD single was called "House of Rapsoul - The Awakening Volume 1" and included "Aum Shanti (Silent Prayer)" and "Wanna Be". After more than a decade in Sweden Rapso Rebel moved back to Trinidad & Tobago, and a video was made for the song "Aum Shanti". For the carnival season House of Rapsoul was performing in Lord Kitchener's calypso tent Calypso Revue.
The second album "Word Catcher - The Awakening Volume 2" came in 2006 and was recorded in Trinidad. Arrangers "Zeuss", Carlysle "Juiceman" Roberts and featuring Ella Andall, Roy Cape and Len "Boogsie" Sharpe. A video was made for the song "Stories".
The album "Jah Love - The Awakening No. 3" came in 2007 with arrangement by Carlysle "Juiceman" Roberts except for the song "Hope" that was arranged and produced by Soca Rebels - The Swedish Connection. Rapso Rebel published his book "Word Catcher - De Genesis of Rapso and Rapsoul - A Biography 1969 - 2006"
From 2008 Rapso Rebel has been doing gigs in Sweden with the band Big Lime which is a side project to Soca Rebels.
