Hip-Hop was dead long before Nas said so...In fact, in Montreal it seemed to be doomed, astrained to finish in a bling glamour where mc's cook up crack in their kitchens. The year was 2003, Khyro (from the notorious Atach Tatuq crew) decided to set up a monthly night in a graffiti art gallery where rappers would come and perform acapella or backed by musicians, upward bass and drums on a regular. The leitmotiv of these evenings was: have something to say. In that period some great mc's came to perform; Sixtoo, Suen (France), Monk-e, Maybe Watson, Linso, JeanBart, Blissa, Wyzah...

Fast forward to 2007, Seba from the group Gatineau insists on the necessity to start the Rap Maudit again, especially because of all the attention the french slam poetry league was getting (it was like people just discovered slam poetry...in 2007....) and because Hip-hop, like the phenix, needed to rise from it's ashes.

Since january 2007, Rap Maudit saw on the stage of the Quai des Brumes more than 50 different rappers from the Montreal region but also from France, Belgium, Ontario, Halifax, U.S.A....rappers that can manage to bring some sense into the lacklustre exposure Hip-Hop seems to be getting in Montreal and to finally bridge the gap between the franco and anglo scenes. And yes, it works. We saw; Loco Locass, Samian, Bleubird, Butta Beats, Sontiago, Grems, Ghettosocks, Prolific, JD Walker, Random Recipe, Giselle Numba One, More or Les, BGreen, Choke, Narcycist, Loe Pesci, Dezuet d'plingré, Monk-e, K6A crew, Nomadic Massive...........the list goes on and on.....

Hosted by Seba and Khyro and backed by Eric Gingras (upwardbass) and Jean-Sébastien Nicoll (drums), the Rap Maudit evenings are starting to be a reference point for underground rappers in need of building a community of likeminded artists.
