The lyrics for this song are taken from a poem I wrote in high school. My beloved English teacher, Mrs. Wesley, wrote that it sounded like a song.
A few years ago I was asked to come up with some original material for a little local show, so I finally tried to come up with some chords to go along with the words. This is the result! And actually, when I think now about the lyrics, I wonder about my teenage self writing these words because I think they've turned out quite true for me... living my life too afraid to take big chances sometimes. But it's also true that I'm not going to stop until I have something amazing to show for my life.
How Far I Didn't Go
By Stacey Terry March 2006
So much road behind me
A lifetime I have stayed
Walking along the shoulder
Never daring where it's paved
So many things I've never done
I guess I'll never know
Now I'm being held behind
by how far I didn't go
The dust has settled at my feet
The wind is but a sigh
I kick at stones that fall away
Indifferent where they lie
I never thought I'd be here
That life just might not owe
More to me than what I gave or
how far I didn't go
CHORUS:
The road ahead is empty
My eyes are full of tears
Still I walk along the shoulder
Weeping for wasted years
The sun is gone behind the clouds
Day dies as night grows
Leaves me crying for the moon
And how far I didn't go
Choices that I made in youth
Doors I would not open
Wishes lost, dreams forgot
Still I keep on hoping
I long to stop and rest awhile
But can't until I show
Something in my life besides
How far I didn't go
CHORUS:
