About this user
The videos I'm doing now are an outgrowth of work in drawing and painting where
the figure as it relates to its environment is the primary metaphor. In much the same way that painting pushed me to create spaces and figures that were peculiar to a canvas, the idiosyncratic nature of video entices me to embrace its ability to forge realities that live exclusively within the technological plane.
I collect visual events, serendipitous plays of light that feel like they have some kind of visual resonance, and then assemble/collage them into spaces that are also found or invented. I evolve moving images organically with little concern as to what their underlying meaning may be. To create complete works, I often employ conceptual frameworks that act as catalysts; points of departure that create both obstacles and accidents which often lead to unpredictable, evocative, and exciting outcomes.
For me, the primary aesthetic problem is the obstinance of working with materials that are already essentially dead. Over and over I ask "How can I make this truly alive?" If I can create unconventional spaces, where curiosity, pathos, and even humor can play, I've succeeded.
