On May, 12, 2006, Zach Jones, 16, passed away from rabies after being exposed to a rabid bat. There were no bite marks, no scratches - nothing indicating he was bitten.
Neither Zach, his family or his friends knew that bats could carry rabies. So, he didn't get the vaccine.
Worldwide - over 55,000 people, mostly children, die each year of rabies - a lot from dog bites.
We don't have dog rabies in the U.S., but rabies is on the rise in our wildlife - raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and bats - and rabies can be found in every state in the U.S., except Hawaii.
Protect your family, your friends and your pets.
Respect wildlife - do not approach any wild animal.
If you find a bat in your house - call your local animal control. If they can't help - call the CDC - 800-232-4636.
Don't take any chances!
Remember Zach Jones!
