You should have saved that free GS to bulb Dynamite later, The right side of Honor would also be a great choice for added happiness from garrisons (park cheap scouts in all of your cities) and defensive buildings (e.g., walls). Plus the reduced cost for upgrading troops with Professional Army is huge.

Automated workers typically build farms when they should be building trading posts, particularly in puppets and peripheral cities (gold producers). That is why you are bleeding happiness so quickly. You don't need to grow peripheral cities so much. It's really going to slow you when you start to conquest again.

As nice as some of those promotions sound (e.g., Cover, Amphibious, etc.) they just can't compete with terrain bonuses plus March and Blitz/Logistics, which will make your units OP.

Have you played TOME4 (Tales of Maj'eyal)? It's a free open-source roguelike that was voted roguelike of the year, and it's very accessible and almost more like an RPG than a roguelike. You should check it out.
