This is a 2-minute snippet of QL2 DANCE presenting QUANTUM LEAP in "IDENTIFY" August 2011 The Q (Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre), Australia
Identify: choreographers Anton (Australian Dance Theatre, Dance North), Jodie Farrugia (Flying Fruit Fly Circus), and Adam Wheeler ( Stompin, Chunky Move) with young dancers from QL2's Quantum leap ensemble in three amazing pieces of contemporary dance, with an original score by bassist Adam Ventoura. Three interlinking short works, looking at how young people identify themselves: where they came from, where they are going.
What is Quantum Leap anyway?
Quantum Leap is QL2 Dance' auditioned youth dance ensemble for ages 15-21, making passionate contemporary dance for all audiences:
* Top professional contemporary choreographers * Collaborative projects * Challenging ideas * Great performances
In this production, Quantum Leap includes young dancers from Canberra and surrounds, plus visiting dancers from Bangkok Dance Academy, Victorian College for the Arts, and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
Who are we?
QL2 Dance: Australian youth dance at its best — transforming young lives and nurturing Australia's future dance professionals.
We create challenging dance with young people. QL2 dancers are proving themselves as the next generation of Australian dance-makers and performers -- in Rafael Bonachela Company, Chunky Move, Bangarra, Sydney Dance Company, Buzz Dance Theatre, Expressions Dance Company, Australian Dance Theatre and Australia's thriving independent contemporary dance scene. Our major projects give a deep understanding of choreography. And we support young dancers and choreographers as they step up to tertiary dance study, and into the profession. You'll have a great experience whether you continue in dance, or take your passion to other fields.

{This features a little snippet of the Australian section of 'Toes on the Edge', reconfigured for the tiny studio stage}
In January 2011, young dancers from Canberra's QL2 Dance headed off to Thailand for two weeks of performance and cultural exchange with Thai dancers in "Toes on the Edge". After several months of preparation, and two weeks fulltime development in January with choreographer Adam Wheeler, they took a short contemporary dance piece on tour in Thailand, hosted by Bangkok Dance Academy (BDA). The tour took in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen, and they lead workshops in contemporary dance overseen by Adam and Ruth Osborne. The piece they created in Australia was combined with a piece by choreographer Armin Saagundo in Bangkok with a group of young Thai dancers. They then got together to create a third section with the whole group.
Drawn from current and past Quantum Leap dancers, the group showcased the talent and depth of Australia's — and Canberra's — young dancers: Samuel Young-Wright, James Batchelor (who got sick just before the northern tour, and rejoined the stage in Bangkok), Michael Post, Benjamin Radburn, Chloe Chignell, Emma Batchelor, Courteney Lee, Tamar Peacock (unfortunately injured just before we left), Eliza Sanders and Jamie Robert Winbank.
The performance in Toes on the edge explores culturally-specific boundaries which young people choose to respect or cross, symbols of conflict between respect and transgression as it is felt in Thailand and Australia.
This project is the outcome of an ongoing relationship between QL2 and BDA. Since 2002 each year 3-4 young Thai dancers have traveled to Australia for 4 weeks to be part of developing and presenting a large youth dance work with Australian choreographers. This led to the development of QL2's Visiting Dancer Program. From QL2's perspective, our dancers have learned a great deal from the Thai dancers: in particular, appreciating their work ethic, cultural beliefs, respect and self-discipline, as well as being able to adapt to our unique creative process often with limited English.
Toes on the Edge was supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-Thailand Institute, which is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and by Bangkok Dance Academy.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Identify is a newly-developed original youth dance work in three stand-alone sections. As Artistic Director of the project, I worked with a wonderful creative team including three professional choreographers selected from all over Australia: Jodie Farrugia, Adam Wheeler, and Anton. All three were invited to return after very successful creative collaborations last year. They have worked intensively with the young dancers to create these works. Identify will show what can be done by talented, creative young people (of various levels of skill and training) working closely with skilled professionals and united by passion, commitment, and hard work.
Each year we create a flagship performance project for QL2's Quantum Leap ensemble and it is always exciting and special. Over 12 years, these projects have recognised the value of their diverse range of skills, experiences and backgrounds; while challenging their creative, intellectual and physical boundaries. The interests of the young dancers drive the content of the works, and they contribute both intellectual and movement ideas to the choreographic process. We provide an environment where the creative process is highly valued — it is as important as the final performance season. We hope this experience will help these young people realise and develop their own potential as artists: not only as 'movers' on the stage, but as creative and intellectual forces, able to use their own choreographic intelligence to engage audiences.
The 34 dancers in this year's ensemble are aged from 14 to 20. Most are from the ACT and surrounding regions — Quantum Leap is primarily an ACT-based program. The entire team has been working honestly and generously to pool their energy, creativity, thoughts and ideas. We also have a Visiting Dancer Program which this year has attracted three dancers from Bangkok Dance Academy, and seven returning to Quantum Leap from their study at university dance courses: Victorian College for the Arts, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and Adelaide Centre for the Arts. They will all join us full time for the last month of the project.
Identify explores the idea of identity from three different perspectives.
Jodie Farrugia's work The Land is Calling looks at our heritage: from the first Indigenous Australians migrating to Australia (perhaps tens of thousands of years ago); each successive wave of migrants in different periods; and the situation of refugees today.
Adam Wheeler returned in January to create the work Precipice that was originally part of Toes on the Edge. This was a collaboration between QL2 and Bangkok Dance Academy which toured to three major cities in Thailand in January. 'Precipice' explores the idea of who we are, the expectations put on us by others and boundaries we choose to stretch or accept.
Anton's work Digital Face considers how we identify ourselves online. Is it a true reflection? Using exciting video imagery from Bearcage Productions, Anton explores the 'inner' identity.
Adam Ventoura has composed the inspired soundtrack for the complete work, collaborating with each choreographer to create music that supports the theme.
Hope to see you there!
