This is one of my G & S favourites (although my absolute favourite is Ruddigore). In this opera they take the mik out the Police. In Iolanthe, well, they took the mik out of Parliament. W S Gilbert wasn't afraid to speak his mind via the medium of opera - and he did it very well!.

When I saw this at the cinema in 1974, I immediately fell in love with Beethoven's pastoral symphony. If you haven't heard the entire symphony, listen and enjoy. Better still, go to a concert and hear it live. And don't forget your hankie - this music IS the definitive magical.
