Recorded Live at the Tack & Hammer, Lysander
The Who was a major influence on the James L Cortland. We did a Who set every night we played. You can definately hear the influences in this songs lyrics, another one of Tommy's Reed's originals. I think it still holds up well 30 years after it was recorded.

Recorded at the Tack & Hammer in Lysander.
James L Cortland would bang off songs back-to-back all night, so it's hard to isolate a single song. This is "Hot Smoke & Sassafras" by the Bubble Puppy, and "Tommy Gun" by the Clash. As with every thing in this band, for us it was all new experiences. We are all singing for the 1st time, and Tommy Reed tears up the Clash tune. We're all singing on "Hot Smoke & Sassafras"

Recorded live at the Firebarn in 1979. "Moods for Moderns" is an Elvis Costello song, and "First Love Tragedy" was one of ours, written by Tommy Reed. I still get a kick out of the insanity vibe of "First Love Tragedy".

"At the Mall" - James L Cortland - Recorded at Dayson Studios in 1979. Written by Tommy Reed.
Three songs in one evening including mixdown for $100. This is the 1st of the three, and the 1st time any of us were in a studio. It has it's flaws, but I'm still very proud of this recording. James L Cortland was doing a lot of original material, and Tommy Reed provided the lion's share of it. I still feel to this day he is one of the most talented people to come out of CNY.
The usual Who influences found in many JLC originals are present .... lyrically & musically. Check out the hand claps in the bridge. Considering it was our 1st studio attempt, and the 3 songs with mixdown were banged off in probably 4 hours (cassette in hand as we went out the door) .... not bad.

The Rave-Ons performing Shakin' Steven's "Too Much" ... recorded at the Lost Horizon 1985 opening for Phantom, Rocker & Slick.
I wish I had video of this band but I don't, and this show is the only recording I own of of the Rave-Ons as a 4-piece. But it's one of my favorite recordings ... I LOVE the sound of that Gretsch Nasville thru my cranked Band-Master. Probably the most musically satisfying of my rockabilly projects.
Spencer Montigue-Vocals, Mike Burke-Guitar, Tyko Helberg-Bass, Rick Reina-Drums.
Board mix to cassette.
