I mostly play Mario games but am willing to take request on rom hacks or non rom hack games. I may be willing to accept a challange but it you request anything as hard or harder then departed Mario my answer will most likely be no.

New save state rules
time to tell the truth the 2 lives rule was just an excuse to cheat... let's face it playing bad unitl you drop to 2 lives then using rewinds kinda takes out the "playing fair" part so here are some less broken rules.
1) do not use rewinds at all
2) only savestate on the overworld
DO NOT SAVE STATE IN THE LEVELS
This system is basicly like using the save system on the GBA verson of Super Mario World where saving the game saved your progress, lives and power-ups and you could save at any time (even in the levels, however if you saved in the level you would start from the begining of the level [or the mid-point if you already collected it])
exception: If a level or game gets too hard and you no longer wish to play "fairly" disregard the above rules.
