This was MXPX's first appearance in Montreal in 1997. It was about time that they show up ! We were all fans back in the day. And it's funny...i ALWAYS thought MXPX would become more popular than BLINK-182. I mean Mike seemed to write a hundred new songs every week compared to BLINK so i was really surprised. Maybe they should have renamed themselves MXPX-281. All i gotta say is the MXPX guys are super friendly, one of the nicest guys we've met and i thank them for letting me film their performance. This was at the SNO JAM 1997 festival. 10 bands, 2 nights. I asked all 10 bands their permission to film. MXPX weren't headlining, they were in the middle but all the kids knew the lyrics to their songs. I remember looking at Mike and thinking: "Man, this guy...he looks pretty perfect, like he's getting all the chicks and stuff. This guy's got it. Bastard." They rocked that night.

There was something in the air that night. LAGWAGON, STRUNG OUT, TEN FOOT POLE, TRIGGER HAPPY, ROACH (soon to be RESET, later to be SIMPLE PLAN) were playing. It was everybody's second show in Montreal and it was called THE GREENLAND WINTER NATIONALS. The booker was Paget & Nick from GREENLAND, named after their respect for pot, hence the GREENLAND Winter Nationals. If there was one dude who was ahead of his time as far as the Californian punk-rock revival, it was Paget. Back in 1994, nobody in Montreal looked like a Californian dude. Except Paget. (Ok, well maybe the guys from the DOUGHBOYS did too). Only punk-rock bands from California would look like dudes from California: extra large shorts, baggy t-shirts, surfer wear. Seriously, in those days, nobody would looked like that, dressed like that, talk like that. First of all, there is no beach in Quebec. You can't surf here. And second, you couldn't find that surf and skate wear around here. But Paget already looked like that. He's the first guy to call me: DUDE. I remember thinking: THIS GUY JUST CALLED ME DUDE ?!?! WOW !!! It's 1994, i'm 18 and i'm now a dude. Some cool dude just called me DUDE. I'm a dude. So it is simply fair that Paget's concert was called the GREENLAND WINTER NATIONALS. Because it was his festival and yeah, it was winter time. I always loved TEN FOOT POLE. REV remains one of my all-time favorite album of the period. In those days, i use to write letters the old fashioned way to all my favorite bands to ask them to film their show. TONY PALERMO is the dude from TEN FOOT POLE who answered my letters. I showed up at the show with his letter in hand. CAN I FILM THE SHOW TONY ? CAN I FILM THE SHOW ? Tony's reply: Sure dude. Fuck yeah dude, thanks ! He brought me backstage but didn't give me a pass. He said: If you wanna stay backstage it's ok, but you gotta stay here cuz you won't be able to come back in. NO PROBLEM MY MAN. So that night, i stayed in the same spot and filmed everybody's show from the same angle. I think it was a pretty good angle. What do you dudes think ?

Ahh Lagwagon. Montreal and Lagwagon always had a romance. True lovers. We loved them so much here that they had to play twice that night ! An early show starting at 6pm and a late show at 10pm. SCREW 32 were opening up for them. It was a really sunny day in Montreal that day. 1996 was such a great year for punk-rock. It was still fresh. It was popular and soon to reach it's peak. 1996 was just great !! I would love to go back. At this show, Derrick was no longer with LAGWAGON but Shawn was. Man, when Shawn Dewey left Lagwagon and they recorded Double Plaidinum, i hated it. I didn't like the sound of it. It sounded boring. It's weird because everybody says it's their favorite Lagwagon album. I just don't get it. To me DUH, THRASHED and HOSS are it. And that's it and that's all you need. I guess that's when the scene started going downhill for me. Around the Double Plaidinum release. Oh well. I still love you guys. You know it.

This was F2F's 3rd time in Montreal in may of 1995. They'd been here in february and they were back 3 months later ! I don't know what was in the air that night but something special was happening. I think this is possibly the best show i've ever filmed. The band gave their all. They knew Montreal was a special city to play in. MONTREAL loved FACE TO FACE. When i met up with the guys backstage, i remember Rob, the drummer, asking me to make him several copies of the previous F2F shows i had filmed at the spectrum. He said his parents wouldn't believe him when he said they were immensily popular in Canada so he wanted to prove it to them. So ok, i made them copies. I can't recall if it was TEN FOOT POLE or F2F who told me this. Well i'm happy that most bands' favorite footage in Montreal is my footage. They're a fan of me, i'm a fan of them. Just how crazy is that ?

It was a sunny tuesday afternoon, june 14th 1994, on St-Laurent street in Montreal. Kids started lining up early in front of the woodstock. Some eating Harveys hamburgers across the street. My high school friend's band were opening. They were called ENOUGH and FOREGROUND. They were punk and hardcore. FOREGROUND had a following as ENOUGH were just starting to perform live. It was ENOUGH's 3rd show and to everyone's surprise, they were opening for NO USE FOR A NAME, a band they all loved. We were all into them and into THE DAILY GRIND album. FOREGROUND had previously opened for ALL and DOWN BY LAW and SAMIAM. Tonight was special. Tonight was the first FAT WRECK CHORDS concert ever in Montreal and kids here were already wearing FAT WRECK CHORDS t-shirts from mail order service. I was lucky enough to see NO USE soundcheck because i was hanging out with my friends who were opening up for them. They played BIOMAG. I thought: it's gonna rock so hard tonight ! When they hit the stage around 10:00pm, i pressed on power on my camcorder and they started with UNTIL IT'S GONE. I had never seen a band play so tight before. It was my first concert ever. At least, first concert with a real band. This was the show that opened the door to FAT WRECK in Montreal.

This was in november of 1995. This was PENNYWISE's first show ever in Montreal but by that time in 1995, they were one of the last few Californian punk rock bands that hadn't yet played here. So i can tell you this about that show: IT WAS ABOUT FUCKING TIME. That's what we all thought back in late 1995. It was like the pharaohs from Egypt had previously sent their servants to entertain us but now we get a visit from one of the pharaohs themselves: PENNYWISE. Bow down ! One of the great Gods of the kingdom of Californian punk rock. Hail to the king ! The place went nuts. I remember that the previous month, RANCID played the same venue but did not allow me to film their show. So i thought that night: PENNYWISE is cooler than RANCID. Fletcher and Jim gave me a 'Sure man. You can film us' answer. Like we're all brothers. That's right guys, we're all brothers.

I was really excited that night. It was RANCID's first appearance in Montreal ever. An unknown band called AFI was part of the show and so was Montreal's RIPCORDZ. I was starting to get known around as the guy who filmed every punk show in town. I was starting to be friends with the promoter. Paget from Greenland productions. Paget was the coolest Dude in Montreal. All the bands would stay over at his place and party after almost every show he booked. It felt to me like the Dischord house in DC. I eventually lived next to Paget for a couple of years. So i was feeling pretty confident that RANCID, on that night, would allow me to film the show since every single band i had asked before said yes. Backstage, me and the dude from the Punk Uprisings show go up to MATT and asked him if we could film the show. MATT looked a bit moody. He said: Not sure. We're like: Whatt ? MATT said: I'll ask TIM. TIM seemed really shy for some reason, never quite looked at us in the eye. TIM said: Dunno...you should ask LARS. The answer is NO because they were on Saturday Night Live last saturday and they feel they're getting too popular for this. I was truely disapointed. Suddenly, this dude shows up wearing suspenders. The PUNK UPRISINGS dude says we could ask DAVEY to film his group. DAVEY is all: YEAH MAN, OF COURSE, OF COURSE ! SUPER COOL. YEAH DUDE. We were both blown away by DAVEY's enthousiasm talking to us. It totally changed our mood. We were thinking DAVEY is cool. When AFI hit the stage, nobody knew who they were. DAVEY said: Hi. BONJOUR ! I just learned that a second ago. So, huh...we're AFI...we're from Berkley, California. And i swear it's as if you could hear a pin drop in the place. Nobody was paying attention. Within seconds of the first few notes, the crowd was going crazy and the rest is history.
www.myspace.com/punkempire Filmed by: JF HAYEUR with Davey's permission I initially thought this was AFI's 1st appearance in Montreal but a friend corrected me, they were here a few months before at Berri Square. I just hadn't made it to the show back then but this was their 1st big show in Montreal, opening for RANCID
