The PS22 Chorus is comprised of 60-70 fifth graders from a NYC public school in Staten Island that has fast become an internet phenomenon. Our videos have already garnered over 7,000,000 viewings worldwide! Perhaps surprisingly, PS22 is NOT a magnet school or specialized school for the arts. We are just an ordinary elementary school. But the accomplishments of our PS22 Chorus kids can't be labeled anything but EXTRAordinary. Just this year they were prominently featured on ABC's Nightline and Good Morning America, and several other national television appearances. (Look for them this Thursday, July 16th on an upcoming MTV NEWS segment!)

The PS22 Chorus has performed with some extremely distinguished musicians in the business, TORI AMOS, CROWDED HOUSE, & STEVIE NICKS to name a few. The kids sang back up vocals on 3 tracks on the debut full length CD from the buzz band PASSION PIT! (That album debuted at #51 on the Billboard Charts.) They've also earned themselves some pretty impressive fans as well, including PEREZ HILTON and ASHTON KUTCHER, both of whom have repeatedly blogged and/or tweeted about the PS22 Chorus!




Why the success and international interest? I guess it's because these kids know what it really means to sing. You can't miss it when you watch them perform. It's not perfect, but it's raw and real. They deliver emotional performances that transcend mere notes and rhythms, although those are good too! To hear kids their age (mostly 10 and 11 years old) not only singing on key, but singing effortlessly in perfect 2 part harmony is pretty astounding. It's fair to say that as their director, the kids continually astound me on the day-to-day. These kids have earned every bit of their tremendous success, and have learned that with hard work and dedication that indeed, anything is possible.

We hope that the success of the PS22 Chorus inspires everyone to remember the importance of maintaining arts programs in schools. This is a point that these kids drive home more effectively than any words I can write.
