In Shogun II they also use firearms. In games from the rest of the series they use firearms and artillery. If the idea of gunpowder and guns in a strategy game is so unbearable then play the ones set in Rome.

That's always a problem with this show, some of the doctors really should know things that they don't or they do say things that don't make sense later. Obviously it's just the problem of decades-long writing (and different writers), but they just write it off as 'timey-wimey'.
