Michael is now 54. Michael started playing guitar when he was just nine. He played guitar in his high school band and that led him to become friends with drummer Glenn Sheedy. They formed a group that would rehearse in Michael's parents garage. They would play at local parties and dances for a few bucks. Then in 1972 the band "Levwood" had small success with a single called "The Fire". It was recorded in a small studio in Bondi near Sydney. Shad Lyons became their manager/producer and they went to work putting more songs down for further releases. Unfortunatley nothing came out of their hard work but the recording experience proved valuable for what came next. Michael started doing more and more studio work and played in some great studios. Alberts in King Street in Sydney was the most memorable. Michael remembers packing away his guitar one afternoon after a session Michael was told that a new band called AC/DC was coming in to record some tracks. Michael says "It was great going back the next day hearing those tracks laid down the night before." Shortly after that came a time when original drummer Glenn Sheedy and new found bassist Neil Smith joined in with Lester V Coombes for a new country show that Lester was putting together. Three years of road tours and performances and "The Overnight Sensations" were a well oiled country outfit. They went to record an album called Lester Live. Recorded at the Penrith Leagues club where they enjoyed a resident engagement on Saturday nights. The show was a huge hit bringing in record crowds in the late 70's. Michael had itchy feet and decided to change his career path. He met Reg Norton at a job he was playing and Reg asked Michael to become his musical director for his act which he was working on. Michael left the country show and joined Reg and within just twelve months travelled to England where they played at "Blazers" in Windsor. The trip turned out to be more of a holiday than full time work and Michael returned to Australia two months later broke and in desperate need for work. Michael found a band and a daytime job. Both helping to pay back the bills that had acrued. Retail day work and music at night became the bread winner for six years. The music during that time was getting more into rock and that is where he re-united with bassist Neil Smith. Neil and Michael worked in the clubs as a trio with drummer Tim Shepherd but were always sure that they needed a bigger sound. It was a few years later that Keyboard/Guitar playing David Hines came along and drummer Wayne Thomas joined in and they formed "Gopher Broke." Pubs, Clubs, Wine Bars, Disco share nights and the like were regular jobs for the boys. They revelled in entertaining. rehearsing two nights a week once for vocals and once for musical arrangements. Three years went by and the day time work and nights were taking their toll. Late nights followed by early starts. "It was by far my most creative time" Michael recalls. But alas it didnt last. differing opinions and personalities were forcing them apart and they eventually split. Michael and Neil joined with Kaye Webb (singer) in a rock outfit called Streetheart and they went to play the same great venues. The band was more laid back without the pressure but it was still not the same. Michael quit the band and decided to concentrate on a retail career. The two ocupations often clashed and caused many frustrations both at home and at work. Michael then found a new love in music with a solo career playing at restuarants and bars. It was a way of keeping his music interest satisfied and still not clash to heavily with the daytime stuff. But then it was just to much the retail was taking over and it has been eighteen years since Michael got back into music again. It has not been until 2006/2007 that he has spent more energy setting up a small home studio and getting his "musical life" back into shape.
It requires patience and understading. Lot and lots of practice. "Enjoy Life Forever".....More to come.... this is more.... Moved back down to Melbourne and have started to get serious about playing again. Loves his recording and is keen to get back on stage. I will let you know more as it happens. Latest update 2011. Began playing live gigs again. I am playing at a restaurant called Chimmy's in Richmond. Great atmosphere and great food and on Saturdays there is a cool singer/guitarist. October 31st update. Just got back home to Australia after going to the UK and having a great time. Looking for another gig a couple of nights a week or maybe some session work. who knows eh?
