At the age of 10 and later at age 16, she received dance training in jazz and contemporary dance, but was always more drawn to freestyle, urban dance culture.
Priya Lisa is in many ways the first female freestyle street/hip hop dancer in India, having practiced the art of freestyle dance mainly through dancing at night clubs around the her city Mumbai from the age of 16.
Now 27 years old , Priya Lisa is a female pioneer of street dance styles in Mumbai, being that she is one of the the few Indian Born women to pursue Urban/Street Dance expression as a full time passion and career.
Being a girl, growing up in India, it was very inaccessible to learn and be part of this world of urban, underground dance. However, she learnt dance by observation and experimentation, through television, film and traveling and after a chance meeting with Prosenjit Kundu in January of 2006, Priya continued her relationship with these dance styles gaining knowledge from Kundu and even visiting NYC, Washington D.C. and Paris, where she had a chance to experience first hand the essence of this dance expression.
She has been actively involved in the growing urban dance scene in India and has been teaching classes in various street dance styles in her home city of Mumbai since 2007, whilst also organizing workshops, practice sessions and performance opportunities for the younger generation.
Priya Lisa is India's first female Waacker & House dancer and has created India's first all Girl street dance group called URBANISTA, by which she wants to encourage the female presence in the growing street dance scene in India.
She organises/hosts a weekly party, which is the first of its kind along with Prosenjit Kundu called BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE especially for the street dance community in India.
Priya has been quoted by Time Out magazine Mumbai as being "One of Mumbai's best known Hip Hop dancers," and has been featured in articles in BBC World News, Asian Age, Time Out etc and appeared in several television/documentary based interviews on Hip Hop and House dance.
She is also a freelance correspondent for www.desihiphop.com, where she provides insight into the urban dance scene in India.
She has performed all over India in cities like Bangalore, Kolkatta, Pune, Delhi, Mumbai etc.
She has also worked commercially as a Hip Hop dancer/ choreographer for names such as PUMA, Bacardi,Sony Ericcson, Smirnoff experience, MTV, Vh1 Hip Hop hustle, Lux India, Bajaj, Malhar Festival etc.
She is also partner creator of Syntheskillz Urban Dance Community with Prosenjit Kundu in India, and is currently trying to create awareness and opportunities for younger dancers in India giving them the guidance that she did not have at their age and helping them reach their full potential and ultimately be able to be internationally recognized for their immense talent.
