PT, an acronym for 'PreachTruth' is the rap name that 21 year old Nasir Shams goes by. His father is an intellectual poet and his mother is a compassionate musician. With parents of that nature it's not hard to recognize where PT finds his niche as a conscious Hip Hop artist.
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Nasir immigrated to New York at age 7. After a couple years in the city, his family moved to Toronto, Canada and found a permanent home. Although the first 7 years of Nasir's life seem like a distant memory, they may have also played a part in embedding certain struggles into his subconscious.
Growing up in Karachi, he was able to witness how corrupt a society driven by money can become. It is safe to say that "Slumdog Millionaire" was not the first place Nasir witnessed people with missing limbs beg for money in order to pay their 'bosses'. An event that sticks out from Nasir's childhood memory is eating ice cream. This may seem common at first glance but this was the first time he heard gunshots. While many families were enjoying their ice cream, members from a political gang started firing at random across the street. At age 5, while running for cover, Nasir was trying to figure out the motive behind their actions. His verdict: Power. Lost in the ruckus of trying to escape unharmed, Nasir realized that the combination of wealth and greed mixed with power facilitate a corrupt system. It is human nature to want control, but the boundary of this control exceeds when human beings try to control each other. Although the first 7 years of one's life seem like distant memories, they were vital towards building the foundations and beliefs that are embedded in PT's lyrics.
Now at age 21, PT has more to talk about than ever before. After being part of a westernized society for 14 years, he has a large variety of topics that need to be touched on. Growing up in a relatively poor neighbourhood in Scarborough, PT has had the opportunity to meet many amazing people. He has seen firsthand what human beings can accomplish when love is their primary objective. He has seen single mother's provide for their kids. He has come across teachers trying to guide children who have never been more lost. He has seen elderly women grin from ear to ear just by having a door opened for them, or a seat on the bus being given to them. Being part of this society has allowed PT to see incredible amounts of light in an environment that has been portrayed to be the opposite.
However, the one area that causes him concern is the media. From the day he arrived in New York
to the day he dropped his first single, "My Resume", PT has seen a steady incline in the media's influence. He has been witnessing the same things that his family ran away from at that ice cream shop. The media is influencing the youth to want power. The industry is pushing greed, money and corruption. Most mainstream artists are not using their voice as a means to send a message but rather to brag. This attitude is rubbing off on our younger generations and is causing a major concern for the future. Therefore, when PT discovers artists on YouTube who are promoting positive messages, it inspires him to continue writing. After all, there is always light at the end of every tunnel. PT believes that 'Mind Over Money' is a movement that can push people in the right direction.
