John Wilkes Booth is a Southern patriot forgotten and only seen as a murder. True he's one but what about Lincoln who is responsible for 600 thousand deaths! The Civil War was not just for slavery, even if it was why would millions of Americans fight in the Civil War? It is was for freedom; less than 10% actually owned slaves, so what were the other percent fighting for? Also remember places up in the North had slavery too! Unlike what our history books tell us the assassination was not about getting revenge (Think about it, even if he was successful he would still be condemned to death, and all that for revenge?) it was to save the South.
According to Booth the war wasn't over because Johnston was still fighting Sherman and the Union didn't capture Jefferson Davis yet. What Booth did to Lincoln has very little difference to what Brutus did to Caesar, Booth killed Lincoln for the freedom of Americans (A voluntary union, embodied in the 10th amendment, stating that the individual states were sovereign).
That's why he said "Sic Semper Tyrannis" and "Tell mother I did it for my country".
It seems to me that John Wilkes Booth's taking of one life is nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands that died at Lincoln's hands. What John Wilkes Booth did was for his country. Everything Lincoln did was for his party and himself. Certainly, John Wilkes Booth acted out of nobility and as a soldier of the Confederate States of America.

"Yet Heaven knows NO ONE would be willing to do, MORE for the negro race than I. Could I but see a way to still BETTER THEIR condition." - JWB [Booth had sympathy for blacks, even to the point of boasting!]

"The South ARE NOT, NOR HAVE THEY BEEN FIGHTING for the continuance of slavery, the first battle of Bull-run did away with that idea." - JWB

"I know how foolish I shall be deemed, for undertaking such a step, as this, Where on the one side, I have many friends, and everything to make me happy. Where my profession ALONE has gained me an income of MORE THAN Twenty thousand dollars a year. And where my great personal ambition in my profession has such a great field for labor. On the other hand—the south have never bestowed upon me one kind word. A place now, where I have no friends, except beneath the sod. A place where I must either become a private soldier or a beggar. To give up all of the FORMER for the LATTER... seems insane, But God is my judge I love JUSTICE, more than I do a country, that disowns it. More than fame and wealth. More (Heaven pardon me if wrong) more than a happy home... A Confederate, doing duty UPON HIS OWN RESPONSIBILITY." - J Wilkes Booth "To Whom It May Concern"

"Until to day nothing was ever THOUGHT of sacrificing to our country's wrongs. For six months we had worked to capture, but our cause being almost lost, something decisive & great must be done. But its failure is owing to others, who did not strike for their country with a heart. I struck boldly and not as the papers say... I shouted Sic semper BEFORE I fired. In jumping broke my leg... I can never repent it, though we hated to kill: Our country owed all her troubles to him, and God simply made me the instrument of his punishment. The country is not what it WAS. This forced union is not what I HAVE loved. I care not what BECOMES of me. I have no desire to out-live my country..."

"...I am here in despair. And why; For doing what Brutus was honored for, what made Tell a Hero. And yet I for striking down a greater tyrant than they ever knew am looked upon as a common cutthroat. My action was purer than either of theirs. One, hoped to be great himself. The other had not only his countrys but his own wrongs to avenge. I hoped for no gain. I knew no private wrong. I struck for my country and that alone. A country that groaned beneath this tyranny and prayed for this end. Yet now behold the cold hand they extend to me... So ends all. For my country I have given up all that makes life sweet and Holy, brought misery on my family, and am sure there is no pardon in Heaven for me since man condemns me so... I have a greater desire to return to Washington and in a measure clear my name which I feel I can do... When if the world knew my heart, THAT ONE blow would have made me great, though I did desire no greatness... I have too great a soul to die like a criminal. Oh may he, may he spare me that and let me die bravely. I bless the entire world. Have never hated or wronged anyone. This last was not a wrong, unless God deems it so. And its with him, to damn or bless me... I do not wish to shed a drop of blood, but 'I must fight the course.' Tis all thats left of me." - John Wilkes Booth Diary

"Booth made many friends during his brief residence in New Orleans. He was the sort of man who forms acquaintances easily, and his talent was already recognized sufficiently to make people anxious to know him. He was interested in all kinds of diversions. He played billiards [pool] and tenpins, [bowling] rode horseback-and did these things with considerable skill... He was never content unless he occupied a conspicuous position, even in his amusements." (Writings of JWB pg.105)

William Hanchett observes, "It was impossible to see him [Booth] and not admire him; it was equally impossible to know him and not love him." (Writings of JWB pg.19)

Harry Ford, a particular friend, always insisted that Booth was "One of the simplest, sweetest-dispositioned, and most lovable men he ever knew." (Memoir John Wilkes Booth A Sister's Memoir by Asia Booth Clarke "Preface")

An acquaintance stated "He used to take long walks with Booth in the hills... Booth was a good fast pedestrian and a great lover of nature and pure air and freedom of the country and hills. Used to talk on all sorts of subjects on these walks: poetry, theatrical profession, literature, and in fact anything that crossed their minds was talked on freely. Nothing was said on politics." (The writings of John Wilkes Booth pg.113)

"When they [slave owners] remind us of their constitutional rights [to own slaves], I acknowledge them, not grudgingly, but fully, and fairly; and I would give them any legislation for the reclaiming of their fugitives." - Lincoln [Lincoln supported the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850]

"My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia,—to their own native land." - Lincoln

"The whole nation is interested that the best use shall be made of these [new] territories. We want them for the homes of free white people. This they cannot be, to any considerable extent, if slavery shall be planted within them. Slave States are places for poor white people to remove FROM; not to remove TO. New free States are the places for poor people to go to and better their condition. For this use, the nation needs these territories." Lincoln

"Free them, [slaves] and make them politically and socially, our equals? My own feelings will not admit of this; and if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not...We can not, then, make them equals." Lincoln at Peoria, October 16, 1854

"I have no purpose directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." Lincoln

"I understand a proposed amendment to the Constitution...Has passed Congress, to the effect that the federal government shall never interfere with the domestic institutions of the States, including that of persons held to service [slavery]...Holding such a provision to be implied constitutional law, I have no objection to its being made express and irrevocable." Lincoln first Inagural Address, referring to the Corwin Amendment
