In the early morning hours of October 1, 2008, a fire broke out at the Kate Chopin House (aka the Bayou Folk Museum or Alex Cloutier House) in Cloutierville, Louisiana. The fire gutted the home and destroyed the collection, though a few artifacts were recovered.
In response, students in the Northwestern State University Heritage Resources programs crafted an plan that could be used to interpret and preserve the memory of the structure, even in its ruined state.
The house is a National Historic Landmark and was the home of author Kate Chopin of Creole descent who wrote short stories and novels in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Master of Arts in Heritage Resources Program holds a heritage education activity on Creole culture for 5th graders from L.P. Vaughn elementary school at St. Augustine Catholic Church and at Badin-Roque Historic Site in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. There were three learning stations at each site devoted to various aspects of Creole culture.
The activity was made possible by a ULS Learn and Serve grant that extended the program's heritage education activities to under-served schoolsand brought attention to an extraordinarily important historic site that was recently placed on Louisiana’s Most Endangered List.

Some historic structures in the Natchitoches area have been getting a lot of skilled help from the National Park Service this past week. Members of the National Park Service (NPS) Preservation and Skills Training Program (PAST) just ended an eight-day tenure in Natchitoches to provide historic preservation maintenance support to Magnolia and Melrose plantations.
Cane River Creole National Historical Park invited the PAST program to Natchitoches to help preserve the link that Melrose and Magnolia Plantations provide to the region's colorful past. By bringing together maintenance professionals that care for the more than 27,000 historic structures the NPS is responsible for, Cane River Creole National Historical Park is ensuring that the best preservation practices are being used on the local structures, which are located within Cane River National Heritage Area and tell an important part of the area's story.
