About Me:
The three programs in the series, Nanotechnology: The Power of Small, are:
Health and human enhancement - This program will explore issues raised by nanotechnology's application to human beings, especially the probable movement from medical treatment to prevention and finally to enhancement of the human body, as well as issues of equity and access. What are the ethical implications of "improving" on humanity?
Security and privacy - Nanotechnology will enable us to become increasingly capable of monitoring all aspects of human activities, in some cases without the knowledge and consent of those being monitored. This capability might be a boon to parents who are concerned about their children's whereabouts, military planners and Homeland Security; and a nightmare to people who want to protect their privacy. How should society respond? Who is responsible for the response? How do we think about such uniquely powerful if unsettling capabilities?
The environment - Nanotechnology could "green" our manufacturing processes and provide agents that will absorb and destroy lethal pollutants. But those quantum properties that make nano-particles uniquely useful will certainly exhibit other unique, not so benign properties once released into the biosphere. Who decides what risk levels are acceptable given the potential benefits? How should society balance the need to assess risks against the drive to provide technologic innovation without stifling entrepreneurship? What is the responsibility of the scientists and others in bringing this information to the attention of the community?
