I am Scottish Roman Catholic who grew up supporting Glasgow Celtic as a young lad from the 70s onwards.I lived in a close knit Scots/Irish community but became aware of Sectarianism at an early age, first by the singing of Irish patriot songs on the school bus, all of us regimentally, I sung on the bus as well, until tensions became so hot as to merit us with a telling off sometime later by a head School teacher. Growing up however, it became apparent through the media that there was something wrong in Ireland, and in my home country the UK. This was echoed at Celtic Park in songs, in literature that was passed on by Celtic supporters at Celtic Park, and by our local supporters bus/social scene.
Throughout all of this a Catholic indoctrination for me, stayed deep at the root of all that was going on, but by no means perfect, in what we would describe here in Scotland the ripple effect of the Troubles in Ireland.
D e m o c r a c y has taken a long time to become more apparent for Roman Catholics, and an acceptable platform for us to assert ourselves both here in the UK and in Northern Ireland. The IRA had said in its statement in 1982 following an appeal from Pope John Paul II to turn away from violence, "That'... upon victory, the Catholic Church would have no difficulty in recognising us'.
Roman Catholics in the Republican Family, Sinn Fein, other Nationalists groups, parties and organisations, are difficult to recognise. They are thin on the ground, with Church attendance following the Troubles of the 1960s to the present, measured at a fall from 95% to now at only 60%.
Far as it appears to be loyal in supporting the Catholic community/areas in Ireland, /Republican-Nationalist what ever they now call themselves, I personally do not recognise Catholicism in many of its supporters. They are out of sync with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
They do not attend the Roman Catholic Church? Also they support policies that are anathema to the catechism taught by The Roman Catholic Church, such as Same Sex Marriages, or other issues of concern they have adopted, such as the widely supported and accepted principles of categorising those deemed to be mentally ill in the community.
I have been castigated, as have others for bringing issues like these to the fore.
There seems no choice now, but to stick with the theological doctrine of Roman Catholicism, rather than follow any of the aforementioned political parties that have plans for your future in this way.
I leave with you this quote from:
(Pope Benedict XVI)
"We can never expect that those who destroy the dignity of human beings, who degrade them, who trample underfoot what other people regard as holy, will ever respect and renew the human race."
