Lennon's harmonica was his hidden soul, and his art too defined that soul; I really believe the other Beatles were all catching up to him from '61-'66 as he led them creatively and you can hear it in Paul's and Ringo's memories. George absolutely adored John, and therein lies the genius.

I believe this song has been analyzed as a Greek dithramb (sp?) as the harmonies in the back ground are curiously out of Aeschylus and the theater from 300BC. The choir and their harmonies mesh across 2,000+ years...

Few songs capture a ballad of 'a lifetime' and all the losses in place falling like dominoes. Faith, personal love, mum, dad, broken hearts and lost days, so happens the passage of time, which you probably won't feel until your 50 if you're lucky.

This song is so Paul McCarthyish of that '75 period, that I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of his melodies unused or sold to them. The piano and drums solos are McC, even with a hint of the Beatles.
