Ancient peoples believed the Great Spirit needed a place of peace and beauty to call home. Legends say Manitoulin is that place. A curve of white beach against calm blue water with sailboats on the horizon. A rocky, windswept point where great waves crash in as the sun sets red. Still green fields that roll down towards a sparkling bay. A quiet night under a sky that is a sanctuary for stars. This is Manitoulin Island.

Treasure Island is a jewel set in the turquoise waters of Lake Mindemoya. The long sandy beach in Providence Bay. Lake Manitou is the largest and deepest lake on the Island and is used year round for activities such as boating, swimming, fishing and snowmobiling.
The Mindemoya and Manitou Rivers flow from their respective lakes and find their way to the south shore of Manitoulin Island. Rainbow trout and salmon spawn in these rivers. A large tract of Carolinian forest with maples, oaks, ironwoods, poplars and white cedar stretches from Mindemoya to Sandfield and beyond, providing a habitat for a healthy Whitetail deer population, a Sandhill crane staging area. The township is on a major North American migratory bird flyway.

The community of Manitowaning lies nestled in a picturesque bay side setting on eastern Manitoulin Island, ten miles from the North Channel - yesterday's Voyageur trade route and today's internationally popular cruising destination.

In 1836 a treaty was developed declaring the entire Island of Manitoulin as a Native Reserve. The town of Manitowaning (originally termed "The Establishment") was established as a joint experimental project by Anglican missionaries and the Canadian government as an effort to achieve a settled agrarian life for aboriginals. The mission (later deemed a failure and abandoned) steadily evolved through a revised treaty in 1855 that opened the Island to non-Native settlement, thereby establishing Manitowaning as the first European community and main shipping port.

Manitowaning means "Den of the Great Spirit"

Saving the S.S. Norisle pjkiley - 1,825 views - 1 year ago
the SS Norisle, the first passenger steam ship built in Canada after World War II. The Norisle is berthed at Bay Street Marina in Manitowaning (within the Township of Assiginack) on Manitoulin Island.

After retiring from service in 1974, the Norisle was purchased by the Township of Assiginack in 1975 to serve as a major tourist attraction and floating museum. She formed a part of the community's Museum Heritage Complex and was open to the public for self guided tours each summer for over 30 years. As a floating museum, the Norisle served as one of the finest examples of the ships of yesteryear that sailed the Great Lakes.

Since we are neighbours (I reside in Sunsite Estates), we should really be friends, dontcha think?

So, I'll take the initiative, and send a friend invite.

You have a very nice page, btw. I've used a lot of these vids to send to friends all over the world. And some have come here because of that.

Is there anything better than Manitoulin? Well, once the Spring arrives! LOL!

TTYL, Chuck :)
