My USA '52 RI was a dog until I dropped in a '54. That pickup saved that guitar from going to Ebay hell. I think the Glendale stainless plate helped a little too, but not as much as the 54.

@genericgeorge But you gotta admit those early British guitar sounds - everybody's - had absolute ZERO sustain and the leads were plinky in the extreme. Things got better when electric 12's caught on, followed by somebody's discovery that amps sounded better when turned above 5.

The solo sounds dubbed. It's so much louder and up-front than all the rest of the audio, it sounds like a different recording although it's definitely John's playing. And just after the last note John's rhythm playing comes back in with a far more subdued tone that matches the rest of the instrum...

@Sincopare - 3 brothers - Dennis had a good voice when he was young and also sang some harmonies on the records. Then he got older and....not so much.

@dlm1166 I haven't tried to play this for years but IIRC it's open G tuning capoed up to 7. I'd forgotten all about this song but I taped this ACL at the time and studied his playing studiously.

@orrico78 Gretsch guitars play like this automatically, all you have to do it make the motions with your thumb and the guitar does the rest. They're friggin' GREAT!

And the Setzer models play like HIM automatically!

Modelers especially PODs aren't good things to use to evaluate pickups. They introduce too much noise, digital artifacts and screwed-up frequency response because of all the sharp filtering. PODS are pretty shrill to begin with. Get a tube amp.
