I have to agree that it is indeed a masterpiece. I think Grieg is undervalued as a writer of large-scale works, but he proved on several occasions that he was a master of sonata form. Also, does anyone know the Ballade Op. 24 for piano? It's another great piece!

For a composer who preferred short forms, Grieg wrote some wonderful sonatas, not to mention a string quartet and a certain, rather popular piano concerto!

Can anyone give me a good reason for people coming on You Tube and hurling abuse at others, especially with such beautiful and spiritual music playing? Abuse achieves only one thing--more abuse! Great, I love the sense of fun you bring to this with the devil costumes. You could make it more of a dance as it's a little laboured, but it's such a tough piece to play. Wonderful music of course, and good to hear it with piano as it works well. Well done!

Yes, this music deserves to be much better known, and what a fine performance. This reminds me of delicious items such as J. Ireland's "Amberley Wild Brooks" and "Spring Will Not Wait". The 20thC English School contains so many riches!

I think this is very fine playing, full of beauty and a sense of atmosphere. Ms Kurapova's performance for me captures the poise and wonder of this glorious piece of music. Maybe there's a little too much rubato, but we so often hear playing that needs rubato and doesn't have it, so I welcome it ...

Yes this is beautiful. It's a pity that older recordings being mono don't offer the same clarity for the piano as for the violin. Emanuel Bay was a fine pianist and a great partner for Heifitz, but the piano isn't as much to the fore as the violin. This great music deserves more attention. Thank ...

She allows the music to breathe and have space. A lovely dignified reading of Schubert. Thank you for posting this here, tobe7. It's a pity some people have to use You Tube to be rude and insult others instead of just enjoying the heavenly music.

Very good breath control. This is a very difficult lied to sing at the right tempo. The pianist (unfortunately not named! ) could have used more pedal, which would have enhanced the performance as a whole, and it's a pity the correct ending wasn't played, but generally not bad.

Thank you for posting the great Cyprian Katsaris playing glorious Schubert! A pity more people haven't viewed/ listened to this as this man really plays Schubert with great understanding.

Thank you for introducing this superb pianist to me! The range of colours in French music is as great a test for a musician as there can be, and so few can achieve the delicate gossamer as well as the fire in this genre, but this lady certainly does, or did.

One little request: can we not refer to pieces of music as "songs"? A song as a general rule, has words and is sung, whereas this is an instrumental work. Well played by both artists.

I find it hard to understand why this isn't played more often. If there is a string player viewing, can you please tell me if this is or isn't well written from the player's point of view, as it may be the only explanation I can think of for it's neglect. It is such beautiful music.

This is such a great example of what Gieg could achieve when he took on larger forms where he wasn't really comfortable. This is a fine performance too. Thank you so much for posting this here.
