Check out this opening number in the Rhythms of the Heart Show where PCM Students composed their own Jaleo with collaborating artists and mentor teachers, Flor Y Piedra!
During the 2008-2009 school year, The Phoenix Conservatory of Music (PCM) and Papago Elementary School partnered to produce the project Rhythms of the Heart: A Celebration of Latin Music!
The project was a year long after school residency that was developed with the idea of providing the very under served, at risk, impoverished 21st Century After School Student Community with the opportunity to be mentored by internationally acclaimed artists from Flor Y Piedra (Peter Torsiello and Liliana de Leon Torsiello, www.florypiedra.com ), Nosotrosound (Hector Martinez, www.nosotrosound.com ), and Ruth Lara Vichules (www.ruthlaravichules.com) 2 days per week for exciting, music fun!
The project culminated with an exciting show of original works and collaboration showcasing the learning that has been happening with the Papago Students in two exciting, pulse pounding performances at the Herberger Theater Center, Stage West. This students not only will have the opportunity to show off what they have been learning for an entire year, but perform in a professional theater with a large scale professional performing ensemble of 23+ cast members!
Guest Artists Included: • Calo Flamenco's Martin Gaxiola •Saxophonist David Crozier •Bass Player Lynn Woolever •Percussionist Johnny Sandoval •Singer and Songwriter Simona Olson •Singer Patricia Munley •Violinist Josiah Steiner •Almardiente Flamenco Dancers Lauren Santiago and Wendy Castellanos •Dancer Michale "Chase" Bell •Dancer Kerrel Brown •And the Rhythm's Dance Team made up of 9 talented young dancers that have been studying under Liliana de Leon!
The audiece was treated to an artistic production of original works from Flor Y Piedra and student collaborated work that inspires, engages, and entertains! This song, Here we are is an example of Jaleo. The students composed their own lyrics.
A special thank you to videographer, Thomas Eldridge!
