About this user

The seeds of Philadelphia were planted in 2002-2003 at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, where most of the guys met each other at the campus Baptist Student Union. Austin Black (vocals and keyboards), Josh Kubler (vocals and acoustic guitar), Jeff Cox (guitar), and Stephen McNeill (guitar) forged strong relationships with one another when they began leading music together, in various line-ups and formats, for different BSU events. They found common ground in having a strong faith in Christ, a passionate love for music, and a fun sense of humor. Once their years of community college were completed, however, the guys went their separate ways for a few years.

It wasn't until the summer of 2006 that things really got rolling. By chance, the guys had the opportunity to lead worship for a small youth retreat, and it felt so good to be back together that they knew the band had to continue. It was during this period that Justin Ricks joined the group on bass and that the band picked the name "Philadelphia" as its moniker. The name "Philadelphia" represents the strong bond of brotherly love which the guys share.

Much of the next year and half was spent writing music and playing as many gigs as possible. The band has played at colleges, churches, coffee houses, youth camps, sporting events, parties, and other events all over Mississippi and the Memphis area. They once even played a a yard sale! After adding Jason Charnes on drums in late 2007, the band entered the studio in April 2008 to record their first (self-titled) EP. It was recorded at Memphis' own JT Studios and features original songs written to reflect the impact of faith and relationships upon their life. The band cites artists such as Coldplay, Switchfoot, The Beatles, Copeland, and U2 as major influences upon their songwriting and musical approach. Philadelphia's debut CD was released last October and is available wherever the band plays, as well as Crossroads Music in Olive Branch. You can also download the music from iTunes, Digstation, or CD Baby.

The band is currently writing new material and plans to go back into the studio later this year to record a follow up to last year's EP. Philadelphia isn't bashful about the fact that they love Jesus and hope that others can find the satisfaction and peace they have found in Him. But they also hope that their music can be a source of inspiration and enjoyment to whoever happens to be listening, regardless of their background. Music is written to express all the ups and downs of life, and Philadelphia loves to share their story through their songs.
