About this user

I was born in Flushing in 1942 and grew up in Little Italy. My parents, Luciano Charles Scorsese and Catherine Cappa Scorsese, were workers in New York's Garment District.

I am "a defender of the faith." That faith, in the power of film, in the endless possibilities of art and life, is at the heart of my body of work.

I entered seminary right out of high school, but my religious vocation within a year took a different turn. I abandoned plans for the priesthood to enter New York University, where I received my B.A. in English in 1964 and my M.A. in film in 1966, soon after joining the faculty of my alma mater. Films were taken seriously in the '60s with an intensity and seriousness unrivaled before or since, and I absorbed and then revitalized much of what I learned from the movies all around me;e verything from the French New Wave and the Italian neorealists and existentialists to the budding American independent movement spearheaded by John Cassavetes. If Jean-Luc Godard was right and one must confront vague ideas with clear images, I took this dictum further. From the start, I seemed to insist on emotional clarity: as early as the underrated Boxcar Bertha, certainly in Taxi Driver and then through the rest my career which began with B movies before launching both my and Robert De Niro's careers with 1973's Mean Streets. De Niro and I worked together again in 1976, on the controversial drama Taxi Driver, and then again in 1980 on Raging Bull, which won the actor an Oscar and I my first Oscar nomination. Although many of my films were controversial, I hit the jackpot of public response with The Last Temptation of Christ, which was picketed and much-criticized by religious groups, while being heralded by movie critics and the Academy.
