It can be tricky. You have to pull it all the way back and then get the front tip of it to move upwards. That's why I have my pinky finger in there.

I completely agree. The old 1/48 VF1 is pretty simple too. My least favorite is the SV-51. The YF-21 is complicated but too beautiful to disparage.
