Penelope commenced her formal vocal training in 2001 with Nicholas Powell after which she studied under Hazel Wood, first at Birkbeck (Dip in Concert Singing) in 2004 and then at Trinity College of Music (PG Dip in Vocal Studies) in 2006. She won a place on the first ever Mentorship Scheme at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in that same year.Over the years she has participated in master classes with some of the best singers, coaches and conductors in the world including Sir Thomas Allen, Henry Herford, Margaret Humphrey Clark, Susan McCulloch, Robin Bowman, Alberto Boischio, Vito Clemente, Alessandro Sangiorgi and Filippo Zigante.
Performances before her change of voice classification in 2009 include soprano soloist in Fauré's Requiem, Vivaldi's Gloria, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras #5, Susanna, and Countess Almaviva in excerpts from Le Nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi in Don Giovanni and Mrs Grose in Britten's Turn of the Screw. She also broadcast excerpts from Handel's Messiah for BBC Radio Cornwall. As a mezzo-soprano soloist she has performed Mozart's Vesperae Solennes de Confessore with the 10.10 Ensemble and interpreted the roles of Carmen, Dido in excerpt form, and most recently Cherubino under the direction of Patricia Panton (Ópera Monte Carlo) and conductor Massimiliano Carraro (Teatro La Scalla) with the Orquestra Sinfônia do Paraná, Brazil. She will perform excerpts from Handel's Messiah under Ricardo Bernardes in São Paulo, and in June of 2011 she will perform Mahler's Kindertotenlieder and 2nd Symphony (Resurrection) with the UFPR Philharmonic Orchestra.
During her career, Penelope has given over 30 recitals and concerts in England, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil and the US, performing diverse repertoire in venues including St Martin in the Fields, St James' Piccadilly, and Regent Hall, London.
Although she is a specialist in repertoire from the turn of the 20th century, she is also much sought after by contemporary composers and has had the honour of UK premiering Alfred Heller's song cycle 'For Arleen', European premiering 3 songs by M.Camargo Guarnieri, World premiering Fernando Nicknich's song Mater and Diego Carneiro's Fantasia sobre Tambataja and Work for voice and cello No.1 and No.2.. She has already been invited to perform European premières of works by Harry Crowl at the Fringe festival of the George Enescu International Music Festival in Bucharest; world premièring settings of Dickinson poems for orchestra, mezzo-soprano and female choir also by Harry Crowl; world premièring a song cycle especially written for and dedicated to her by Raul Passos, and Diego Carneiro's next composition 'Imagens da Roraima' commissioned especially by photographer Orlando Asevedo for his exhibition at the Museu Afro in São Paulo.
Her love of Brazilian music took her to Brazil in 2006 where she now resides. She is known and respected in England as a specialist in this area and is regularly invited to perform in London by the Iberian and Latin American Music Society (ILAMS). As a researcher and academic she is also writing a guide to Brazilian Art Song for singers. In Brazil she is working to promote European art song and has teamed up with pianist and composer Raul Passos to achieve this. As the White Steps Duo they have been invited to give a series of lecture-recitals at Paço da Liberdade in Curitiba, and in other cities within the State of Paraná. Together they perform mainly the music of Debussy, Poulenc, Satie, Bridge, Britten, Vaughan-Williams, Montsalvatge and Mahler among the better known Villa-Lobos, Claudio Santoro and Waldemar Henrique. In a country which favours opera, their tireless campaigning for the art song and recital form has earned them the invitation to be the artistic directors of Brazil's first ever competition exclusively for this genre. Due to their love of all chamber music, they decided to also co-found the chamber group The White Steps Ensemble, due to be launched later this year.
