[W]hosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (st. Paul, 1 Corinthians 11:27, ~AD 55 )
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. (Jesus' words, Gospel of John 6:56, AD 95)
Bread of God is what I desire; that is, the Flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the seed of David; and for my drink I desire His Blood, that is, incorruptible love. (St Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to Romans 6, AD 110)
Christ is the bread of those of us who attain to His body (St Cyprian, On 'Our Father', ~AD 230)
Before the blessing of the heavenly words another nature is spoken of, after the consecration the Body is signified. He Himself speaks of His Blood. Before the consecration it has another name, after it is called Blood. (St. Ambrose, On the Mysteries 9:54, ~AD 387)
How many now say, I would wish to see His form, the mark, [...]. Lo! you see Him, Thou touchest Him, you eat Him [...] He gives Himself to you not to see only, but also to touch and eat and receive within you. (St Chrysostom, Homily on Matthew 82:6, ~AD 390)
[Christ] took into His Hands that which the faithful know; and in a manner carried Himself, when He said, 'This is My Body.' (St. Augustine, Expositions on The Psalm 98, ~AD 400)

Just as a man cannot live in the flesh unless he is born in the flesh, even so a man cannot have the spiritual life of grace unless he is born again spiritually. This regeneration is effected by Baptism: 'Unless a man is born again of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God'[Jn 3:5].
