In 1991 my brother Patrick and myself visited our parents and younger brother Mike in Floresville, Texas. At that time a new video technology, called the "flying erase head", was introduced to VHS camcorders. A flying erase head let you stop taping for a moment, and then start again without a break in the action. The video edit was seamless, like in the movies. You could even add music later, if you had the right cables.
For that first visit we borrowed the neighbor's camera. When we visited again, next Christmas, Mike got his own.
Over a period of about 5 years, visiting Texas for a week or two during college vacations, we made these movies with Mike's camera. Patrick and Mike would always star in them, and I would always direct.
These movies were not edited. If we made a mistake during the taping of a scene or shot, we rewound the tape, did the bad piece over, and kept going.
We also didn't write scripts. Sometimes I would jot down a few notes before starting, but for the most part these movies were made up on the spot, written during the shouting matches we had between pressing PAUSE and RECORD.
