Paul Groethe, a native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, began his percussion career at the age of 7 and by the age of 12, he was performing regularly in churches. During his high school years, he studied under the tutelage of Dr. Terry Vermillion, Music Department Chair at St. Cloud State University. He performed with the St. Cloud All-Star Jazz Band, the Central Minnesota All-Conference Jazz Band and was runner-up percussionist for the Minnesota All-State Jazz Band.

He is a 2007 graduate of the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN, where he was awarded the Merit Scholarship, the highest scholarship ever awarded. While there he studied under Dave Stanoch, Marv Dahlgren, author of "Four-way Coordination" and Gordy Knutsen, drummer for the Steve Miller Band. He participated in a variety of ensembles from R & B to jazz to rock.

Since 2007 , Paul has performed with a variety of bands: Rock, Christian Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz and Classic Rock cover bands. He comes from a long line of music instructors including his grandfather, Roger Barrett, who was director of bands and head of the music department at St. Cloud State University for 36 years.
